I have received more messages related to my original post and my summary.
First thanks to Dr. Thomas P. Blinn of DEC. In my original post I stated
that I knew I had a "AlphaServer 3000", that is not correct. I have a DEC
3000, and there is a difference when searching for specs, an AlphaServer
3000 does not exist (See Below Post).
Also thanks to Peter ? for the correction to my first Summary (Second Post
Below).
Post by Dr. Thomas P. Blinn:
Digital never built a system called an "AlphaServer 3000". We did build a
number of systems called the DEC 3000 family, and some of them were sold in
server configurations.
There is no command or utility that will provide the information you seek.
Some of that information might be found in the Digital Systems and Options
Catalog, but the catalog is regularly updated with the addition of newer
systems and removal of older, no longer marketed systems.
If the front of your system has a nameplate that says "DEC 3000" at the
top,
then it's a DEC 3000 system, not an "AlphaServer". If the front really has
the word "AlphaServer" on it, then it's not a 3000.
When the system boots, a number of text records are written in the log file
/var/adm/messages and I believe that message will have the system marketing
model information for the system as well as the amount of memory
configured.
There is other interesting information displayed there as well. But some
of
the information you want just isn't known to the system, it's only in the
catalogs.
Post by Peter:
Just a brief addendum. On the 400/600/700 series, the model number
appears under the little "door" on the front of the machine.
