dial in modem help

I have a 250 running du 4.0d that I'm trying to configure for modem dial
in. I posted a question before about the pipeline 15, but I can't even
get an analog modem to work. I've set it up according to the
documentation on the cd:

b38400:dv=/dev/tty00:br#38400:pa=none in /etc/remote
(and then I can tip to the modem and it is configured to auto answer)
modem:23:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 tty00 38400 (/etc/inittab)

the caller can call in, the modem negotiates, and they never get a login:
prompt. before I set the ate to 0, I was getting the login prompt in the
ps listing. Now, I have no idea where it's going.

I have this set up for ppp, also according to the docs on the cd. If I su
- pppdaccount, I get all the lovely ppp stuff to the debug log file, but
when a person dials up, they never get that far. they never seem to get
the login: to start with.

help, please

thanks
