I asked how long folks thought it'd take to install the most recent aggregate
patch kit for DU 4.0b on an Alphaserver 4100 with 512MB-1GB of memory.
Thanks to all who responded, you know who you are...
Times reported:
30-45 minutes (2 votes)
20-30 minutes
15 minutes
2 hours
20 minutes
27 minutes including reboot
Additional info noted:
* patches installed single-user, which speeds it up
* need to factor in system dump time prior to patch, and possibly
after
* must factor in removing previous patches, rebuilding kernel,
rebooting (this caused 15 min. install to take 75 min.)
* might want to dupatch while in multiuser to check all the software
and switch to single user only when ready to really apply
the patch
Now that I've figured this out, looks like we might be upgrading instead, in
either case over 4 systems between now and sometime Friday night, plus HW
installs, so my summary on the "upgrades vs. fresh installs" topic will be
forthcoming - busy week. %:^P
Thanks again...
