Dear managers,
After years without problems with my tape drive, it has suddenly failed
to function. My vdump backups fails like this:
path : /usr/users
dev/fset : users_domain#users
type : advfs
advfs id : 0x3281cbac.000736eb.1
vdump: Date of last level 0 dump: the start of the epoch
vdump: Dumping directories
vdump: unable to write to device </dev/nrmt0h>; [5] I/O error
vdump: unable to prompt input for retry on device; [25] Not a typewriter
The command
# scu -f /dev/nrmt0h show diagnostic pages
gives the following output:
scu: 'SCMD_SEND_DIAGNOSTIC' failed, EIO (5) - I/O error
scu: Sense Key = 0x5 = ILLEGAL REQUEST - Illegal request or CDB parameter,
Sense Code/Qualifier = (0x24, 0) = Invalid field in CDB
I've tried to
# scu -f /dev/rmt0h reset device and
# scu -f /dev/rmt0h reset bus
but the device still will not function. I've also tried low tech solutions
as swiching the tape drive (which is an extern device) off and on, but it
did not change the situation.
My system is:
* AlphaStation 200 4/166
* DU 4.0B (will upgrade to 4.0D soon)
* Sony SDT-5000 tape drive
Hope sombody has a suggestion. Is the drive dead and need replacement, or
is there something I can do to repair it?
Best Regards,
Per-Ivar
