SUMMARY: Using Exceed with CDE

Hi, managers,

Two of you suggested that I should be using XDMCP Query mode in Exceed,
instead of Passive mode, to connect to the alphaserver and run a
chooser, and they gave the necessary configuration settings. So I will
reconfigure Exceed and give XDMCP query mode a try.

Many thanks!

Helen

From: Bob Parkinson <rwplists_at_omni.ac.uk> :

I do all my administration from a PC with Exceed in CDE, and you seem to
be attempting to use it differnetly to me. I've set up my exceed to run
xdmcp query to my alphaserver, running in single window mode. This is
done from the Xconfig program, Communication, mode setting.

When I start exceed, it gets a chooser list of avaliable servers, and I
can selet my box, and get a logon prompt.

From: "Landert Rene" <Rene.Landert_at_bakom.admin.ch>

my setup in Exceed is the following:
Start Xconfig, choose "Communication", set Mode to XDMCP-query,
configure this mode as Connect Host to the name of your Unix Server,
Display Class and Key must be empty.
Then choose "Windows Mode", set Windw Mode to Single.
Then restart the Exceed Server on your PC.

with this setup you should get the login screen o the CDE on the DU
server.

and jmh_at_zk3.dec.com (Jan Mark Holzer, UEG) suggested some other settings
to check:

not being an eXceed guru nor a PC type person my guess would
be that you'd have to tell eXceed on the PC to allow
        multiple window managers to run.
If you could verify the following 2 points :

Run eXceed setup/config and check for :

                - remote window manager must be enabled
                - root window drawing must be allowed

I've heard this should work with eXceed V6 but I'm not sure
        about V5.x ...

Original question:

Hi managers,

Can anyone give me any clues about using Exceed from Hummingbird with
CDE on DU 4.0D, please? I use it with DECwindows on DU 3.2C with the
command:

/usr/bin/X11/dxsession -display _at_d -xrm "*security: False"

and this seems to work on 4.0D too, but I realise it probably isn't
correct as it avoids the normal login screen and doesn't get logged to
/var/adm/utmp, and it gives the following messages in the console log:

mwm: Another window manager is running on screen 0
mwm: Unable to manage any screens on display.
  Process xxxxx exited "mwm"

but otherwise it is useable. What command should I use to run CDE? The
command

  /usr/dt/bin/dtsession -display _at_d

just produces a window with the message:

The file /var/tmp/sdtdbcache_$DISPLAY is either missing or empty. This
is most likely due to the file system for /var/tmp being full. Please
use the failsafe session option on the login screen to login to the
system and free up approximately 300 disk blocks in /var to allow a
  normal CDE login to succeed.

The file system for /var isn't full and I can write to /var/tmp, so I
suspect I may have bypassed whichever routine should have created the
sdtdbcache* file.

I am using Exceed v.5.1 with Windows 3.1.

Any help would be appreciated! TIA

Helen
