Replacing string with special Character using SED etc.

I want to REPLASE a string containing Forwad-Slashes with a single word in a
TEXT FILE.
     e.g... /tmp/tmp1/tmp2 by $tmp


I can do this in Vi editor ,

but as I have large number of text files containing this string so I would
like to do it through Shell Script.

So, can somebody provide solution.
