telnetd problems

hi -

a user in our department has a DU 4.0D machine that was working fine
until a power down yesterday. now it won't accept telnet (or ftp)
connections but you can use LAT to access it. seems that the telnetd
process doesn't want to start. trying to start telnetd manually with
the -debug flag produces the error

telnetd: getpeername: socket operation or nonsocket

and the daemon won't run.

any ideas what's going on ?
