Summary : Backup Scripts / Single User Mode

Many thanks for all the wonderful responses, particularly : Tom Blinn,
Whitney Latta, Larry Schafer and John Hergert.

The conclusion is that any script will be killed when shutting down to
single user mode !

BUT it is possible to backup the the system in single user mode using
cron. The basic principle is to create a file e.g. /tmp/dump then either
edit /sbin/bcheckrc or create a script in /sbin/rc2.d that checks for

the existence of this temporary file, performs the backup and then
deletes the temporary file.
