SWXCR RAID Errors adding external StorageWorks Shelf Disks

Hello, everyone!

I'm having problems adding an external StorageWorks shelf to a
3 Channel RAID controller using the external connectors on the card.
I spent about an hour initializing four 4GB drives into a 12GB RAID5
logical disk which goes just fine. When booting Digital UNIX V4.0, it
starts giving "xcr_logger" errors about a "Hard Error Detected" and
doesn't see the first two re0 and re1 drives, but it does see the re2
RAID drive.

The system does bootup after the errors and you can see the
mounted partitions from the original disks OK. The SWXCR software
however gives "Shelf failure on channel 1" errors. It keeps logging
those errors, so I removed the external shelf and rebooted again
Ok. Below is info on the Alpha 2100 and RAID drives.

Does anyone know what the xcr_logger means or what to do to
figure out why adding a fourth RAID logical drive is messing up the
first two? I tried searching through the DU 4.0 aggregate patch I
found on the Web, but didn't see anything for xcr_logger or SWXCR.
The unit 0 re0 and unit 1 re1 drives give the error, but it sees unit 2
re2 drive OK on bootup. Is there something in the kernel that needs
to be reconfigured before adding the drives?

The internal RAID drives are on channel 2 and seem to work OK.
Does using channel 0 or 1 on the external connectors of the PCI
card cause problems for logical drives already configured on the
other channel? Is there something I probably missed setting things
up? Something probably stupid? <grin>

I also gotta say I really dislike having to boot single-user to run
the
SWXCR manager software! What a pain spending an hour with the
system down initializing a new 12GB logical drive! I wish they would
have come up with a tool to do it online with the system up in
multi-user mode. Its difficult to do such work on a production system
to add new RAID drives... Argh...

Thanx in Advance! Send mail and I'll summarize!
