Sorry about the slow response on the summary; been a hectic week.
I got several responses, most of which referred me to the
www.unix.digital.com web site for a good "Why DU" overview. Common
consensus, however, seemed to boil down to the fact that all of the UNIXes
out there are pretty much the same except in certain mission specific
instances and that one should get whatever is best given your
circumstances (training of personnel, price, etc).
Our specific choice of OS and hardware hasn't been decided yet. It will
be decided by which engineering group ends up runing the product line in
question. If it's mine, I'll go with an all DU envronment running on
various racked Alpha clones. If it is the other group, I suspect they
will go the sun route.
Functionally, however, it really won't matter.
