ANSWER:
I'm sorry for such a crappy explanation first time around... but I got it
solved...
they would do nslookups using nameservers in resolv.conf, but couldn't
resolve DNS in netscape....
Turns out... one machine didn't the BIND part of "hosts=local,bind,yp" in
the svc.conf
none had /etc/svcorder containing local then bind. And one machine didn't
have a resolv.conf (oops). A combination of fixing/checking all these
proved useful!
