DEC 3000/300 serial console setting

Hello all,

I have a few 3000/300 (X and LX) boxes running 4.0D which I would
dearly like to run without screen & keyboard. Unfortunately a couple
of them were installed with screen & keyboard so taking the keyboard
off doesn't seem to allow them to boot.

Also, connecting a serial cable to the serial port nothing comes out,
i.e. I assume I have to set the console to serial in some way.

I haven't found any printenv variable which seems to do the trick, any
ideas?

On a separate note: once I have the console set to serial does it have
to be connected at all times?

Finally, 4.0D insists on installing X, fair enough, even if the
machine is running on a serial console, any ideas on what I can "junk"
without causing major problems from the subsets? I know they are
"mandatory" but, at least in 3.2[cg] X was "less mandatory" ;-)

Thanks,

Arrigo
