Dump problem - anyone ever figure this out?

Hello all,

I'm using a script to do nightly backups. Alas I admit it, the script
was given to me and I haven't had time to fully understand it's workings.
Still, it has always "just worked", until last night. I run the script
nohup'd and backgrounded. This morning there were hundreds of error
messages in the file and the script was still waiting for a response.
I checked the alpha managers archive and found similar problems before,
but did not find any definitive resolution.

It's very odd, this message. It seems to start with this:

dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)

dump: Cannot open device file /dev/nrmt0h
      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^<----- Bad thing..

dump: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to retry the open?: ("yes" or "no") dump: Act
ual: 51088 tape blocks on 1 volume(s)
dump: Feet remaining on tape: 5919

But then dump goes merrily on, or so it would seem. Here's a few lines from
later in the nohup.out file:

+ echo /mnt0 to nrmt0h on rt-tss
/mnt0 to nrmt0h on rt-tss
+ /usr/sbin/dump 9unbsdf 64 6000 54000 /dev/nrmt0h /mnt0
dump: Dumping from host ns.encore.com
dump: Date of this level 9 dump: Tue Jun 23 16:51:31 1998 EDT
dump: Date of last level 8 dump: Mon Jun 22 17:07:55 1998 EDT
dump: Dumping /dev/rrz2c (/mnt0) to /dev/nrmt0h
dump: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)
dump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories] (continued)
dump: Estimate: 2623 tape blocks on 1 volume(s)
dump: Dumping (Pass III) [directories]
dump: Volume 1, tape # 0001, begins with blocks from i-node 2
dump: Dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
dump: 19.52% done -- finished in 00:00
dump: Actual: 2656 tape blocks on 1 volume(s)

It seems to be working.. and to the same tape it couldn't open before.

Later in the file I get hundreds of
dump: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to retry the open?:
messages.

Eventually I see:
dump: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to retry the open?: ("yes" or "no") dump: NEE
DS ATTENTION: Do you want to retry the open?: ("yes" or "no") dump: SIGTERM rece
ived
dump: The ENTIRE dump is aborted
dump: SIGTERM received
dump: The ENTIRE dump is aborted

But that is followed by 150 lines of apparently successful dump output
lise the section quoted above..

I don't get it... Any ideas out there?

Thanks!
