tcp/ip set up problem

Hello...

I used the CDE to try to set up tcp/ip on our new Alpha 800 running DU
4.0D. When I tried to commit the name server, I got the message that the
name server name was bad. I had listed 'hood.edu' as the domain, then tried
both 'excali' and 'excali.hood.edu' as the name server name, and entered
the actual dotted quad address in the appropriate box. I got the error
message either way, but the hosts file was updated with the info I entered.
Now I can only log in as a fail safe session. Otherwise, I get the error:
'dtsession: unable to start message server - exiting'.

Anybody know why the name server name isn't being accepted?

What files can I edit to return to a 'network unconfigured' state? I've
tried reverting to the original hosts, svcorder, and rc.config files - the
only files that appeared to be modified in /etc, but still have to log in
in fail safe mode.

Thanks in advance - any advice is greatly appreciated!
