Third Party Ethernet

I needed to add a second ethernet card to an APW 500 running DU 4.2.
Based on a tip from this mailing list, I purchased an SMC 8432T
("Etherpower") with the DEC 21041 chip. I put it in the machine and it
worked like a charm, once I rebuilt the kernel and modified the
rc.config and hosts files.

Anyway, now I need to do the same thing with an AS255 running DU 3.2. I
tried using the same card in the 255, but it wouldn't go. On power up,
I got the following message:

ea....e9.e8.e7.e6
*** error (EWA0), 1.5
e5
>>>

My understanding is that the reason the card worked in the APW500 was
that DU 4.2 has a built-in driver that recognizes the 21041 chip. I
noticed that the primary ethernet on the AS255 (which is built into the
motherboard) appears to be based on an earlier chip, the 21040-AA. Is
it reasonable to think that if I find an ethernet card that used the
21040-AA it will work in my AS255? If so, does anyone know where I can
find such an ethernet card (I called SMC and they said they don't make
them anymore). If anyone has a spare one, would you sell it to me?

sincerely,
