This is not strictly a DecUnix system management issue, but I'm hoping
someone in this community might have experience with this product and
could offer some help. I'm having no luck with DEC (Compaq!) software
support.
For those who are offended I submit such a question, I apologize, and

For the faithful others...
I am running AltaVista tunnel 98 server on a DecUnix 4.0d server. I am
installing the tunnel 98 client software onto win95 pcs. The tunnel
works correctly for the most part, except for a dns snag. When the
tunnel is activated the server passes to the client a dns server to use
for internal hostname resolutions. Unfortunately, this server cannot
resolve external hostnames and win95 pcs seem to operate under the
implementation that if the first dns server they try does not have an
answer for them that they will not query the second dns server in the
list (they would only query the second server if the first was
completely down and unresponsive). The second server, being a server
that does know how to resolve external names, could respond if the
client tried. So it seems as if I can resolve either local hostnames or
external hostnames, but not both, because I don't have an internal
server that can do both. (My internal dns servers don't resolve
external addresses because they, maybe until now, don't have to. User
access to the outside world happens strictly through a proxy server and
the proxy server resolves external names when users make connections to
it.)
Has anyone else using this product run into this problem?
Thanks for listening,
