File opened with "a" is overwritten

Hello,

I've encountered the following interesting situation: I have a file,
opened in append mode ("a" or "a+b", in two different programs), which
is overwritten with each access.

I have an Alpha with DEC OSF 4.0a.

Has anyone encountered anything of this kind before?
