We have an AlphaStation 600 running DU 4.0A. It had a hardware problem and
just came back from the local Digital carry-in service center. In the course
of repairing a failed fan, the tech replaced everything else
first--including a motherboard.
When I tried to bring the system back up, it had a variety of problems. I
posted a message to the list ("INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly"
errors [summary forthcoming]) and got some useful pointers. The most notable
was that /usr wasn't mounting.
After investigating further, I realized that the system came back from the
system with the SCSI devices renumbered. rz0 is now rz8, rz1 is now rz9,
etc. Everything is on the scsi1 bus. So no wonder /usr isn't mounting; the
link in /etc/fdmns/usr_domain points to rz0. And of course none of the other
non-root filesystems mount either.
I'm surmising that in the course of reassembling the system the Digital
technician either missed a jumper or recabled something wrong. Reading the
"AlphaStation 600 Series User Information" isn't particularly enlightening.
What do I need to do to rearrange my SCSI bus so that it is back the way it
was before?
