The origial question was this:
*****************************************************************************
I have been working with joind for a little while now and it does
mostly what it should. What I would like to know though, is weather it is
a stable enough implementation that people are actually using it
successfully in any kind of larger (>200) scale implementation.
Specifically with giving out IP addresses based on the MAC address.
The archives did not give me a good feeling about the viability of
this, as admitted by DEC, old code base.
******************************************************************************
I got four responses within 30 minutes thanks goes to:
Richard Jackson
Kevin Oberman
Tim Winders
Stephen LaBelle
I got 0 responses of people that are actually using joind in
production at all. The responses seemed to be pretty unanimous in stating
that joind was not really stable. All respondants suggested one of two
alternatives to joind.
Alternative 1: Use joind, but get the latest version. This is
commercial software and the web site is www.join.com.
Alternative 2: Use ISC's DHCPD at www.isc.org/dhcp.html. I
beleive that this is freeware.
