Hi DU Admins

My question was whether I could get away with just installing
the named daemon instead of the whole installation from BIND 4.9.7.

Thanks to Irene Shilikhina, Dave Tetreault, Charles Richmond,
Sean O'Connell and Mark Allen for their replies.

Irene and Dave said they just installed named and named-xfer
in /usr/sbin without any problems. Sean said much the same
and also suggested installing the ndc script in /usr/sbin.

Charles and Mark both warned about problems if libresolv.a
is not installed. Charles said:

If your libresolv.a and your running 'named' don't match then
other things that you build, like sendmail, can exhibit bugs.

Install it all in /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/lib, etc and make
   sure that your user's LD_LIBRARY_PATH includes /usr/local/lib.

And Mark said:

Keep in mind that unless you replace (or simply keep and use) the new
libraries in BIND 4.9.7 that any subsequent packages you build using the
old libresolv.a will remain vulnerable to stack smash and other attacks.

Personally, I'd move the libraries into /usr/lib with a name like (for
   example) libresolv-new.a

That way you could choose which to use at compile time.

I think I'll follow Charles suggestion. I like to keep the system
areas as free of foreign clutter as possible. Makes life easier
during OS upgrades.
