machine hangs on malloc_mem_alloc

We have a RAID server running DU4.0D which is hanging with the
following message in syslog and on the console:

Jul 8 12:29:07 foxtail vmunix: malloc_mem_alloc: no space in map

a range of commands still work, ls/cd/grep but ps hangs, and cannot be
interrupted by ^C/^\/^Z class terminal interrupts.

NFS service hangs badly on this problem. all clients get NFS server timeouts.

its possibly related to the dumpcycle, it seems to be happening more now
that a full dump on a set of extents on a 40Gb raid array are near full.
(dumping to TZ89)

The kernel has been made with a simple maxusers 32 increase, no other
tuning.

Any comments? a known problem?
