I had many more usefull responses after i posted my original summary, so here
they are:

We just replaced a HSX40 with a HSZ70.
The technician told us that he had never changed batteries on HSZ70,
whereas we changed batteries every second year on the HSZ40.
Alledgedly because the contact were bad and deteriorated.

I have found that they are only good for one year. You can order them
straight from the manufacturer very inexpensively:
Portable Energy Products
Thinline Energy Cell
PLA02V50 (2 of them)
Phone #408-439-5100
Fax #408-439-5118
$26.50 each

I don't know the exact details for replacing batteries before they die, but we just
suffered through a disastrous replacement. DEC's own field support technicians
required that we shut the system down prior to replacing one of a pair on HSZ-52's.
When the system
returned, the files and file systems were gone. The HSZ's had lost all records of the
File Systems installed (4 45 GB RAID-5 sets) on each controller.
Make backup's and get assurances before you start.
I think some time for 'practice' battery replacement should be scheduled before you
rely
on the 'dual' nature of these controllers. We didn't get that luxury, and paid the
price for
not knowing the correct procedures.

check out the new storageworks SW ; SWCC v.2.0
you can run the agent on UNIX/VMS/NT for HSZ,s & swxcr's
When the HSZ has a problem(batteries included) it can send mail or
page..

I had a battery go bad in an sw300 cab. (calls itself a swxcr-4, actually
the orginal hsz40.) battery went bad and the envronmental control stuff on
the controller wnet off. connecting to the controller showed me it went
bad. (do a "show this" or "show other" and the battery status is there.)
anyway, the machine predates my arrival here but i figure it's been up and
running for atleast 3 years.

Bugs,
depends on what sort of controller you have.
The HSZ-40 batteries have been very un-reliable.. i believe
their onto their 3rd redesign. All the batteries on our HSZ40;s
have been replaced atleast once. (Digital say the battery problem
should now be fixed)
The HSZ-50 uses a different battery - i'm not sure how long their
meant to last. One of our HSZ-50's mysteriously developed a flat
battery over night whilst mains power should have been still supplied.

Bugs,
HSZ controllers have two batteries be controller board. The majority of the
time it is not how many years but at least one year if you got a good batch.
These batteries are tested daily by a build in program. You can Telnet to
an HSZ, example Telnet BS2 or what every you named them, should you be using
an Dec90 or some type of terminal server box. If not you can connect the
console monitor to the HSZ and type show status and show other to see what
it says. There is a wealth of information on the show screen. Part of this
is the batter others the cache etc.
