I've finally gotten DEC Unix 4.0D installed and working on my AlphaStation
200 4/166 (80mb RAM, RZ26, RRD45, etc). However, DNS lookups are *horribly*
slow. I can type an address into netscape, and it takes a full two or three
seconds to look up the address and then try to load it.
A Windows98 machine on the same local LAN (connected to the 'Net via a
128k dedicated ISDN line) works just fine and is very speedy.
I've got "local, bind" in /etc/svc.conf for hosts, and resolv.conf is
corrrect as far as I can tell.
I dont *think* its a RAM issue (I have 80mb).
Also, anyone have suggestions for "tweaking" and stripping down a DU4
install? I tried turning some stuff off (SNMPD, etc) by disabling the
startup files in /sbin/rc3.d/, but then CDE wont properly work.
I'm eventually hoping to get WindowMaker running as the window manager,
but CDE looks so tightly integrated that it will be hell to disable it
and all of the sub-programs. Not near as easy as disabling it on
Solaris (e.g., rename one startup file).
THanks for any help.
Bill
