SUM: Enabling su(1) to root

Wow! talk about response!

Requires adding the user to the system group in /etc/group.

It also requires initiating a new process via login(1) or su(1).

It was this latter detail that derailed my previous effort to get it
working. I kept trying from the same terminal window after modifying
/etc/group. Logging in again caused the change to take effect.
