4.0d upgrade problem

I recently upgraded a Alpha 1000 from 4.0a to 4.0d.
Everything went smoothly except I now notice the following:

Some users processes dont die off correctly when they
logout. I noticed that one user was logged on 5 times and
decided to investigate why. I noticed after doing a ps -t
tty?? that they have no processes running at all. Yet they
still show as being logged in. Apparently they arent
logging out correctly or something but my question is how
can I get rid of these without rebooting. I would imagine
at some point I will reach the maximum number of users and
have to get rid of them in order for people to get on the
machine.

thanks,
