Thanks to all who responded. Original problem was the who
command was showing users who werent actually logged in at
the present time. Upon looking at their processes, there
were no processes active either, but they still showed up
as being logged into the system. The problem began just
after upgrading to 4.0d.

The solution seems to be with the /usr/adm/utmp file.
Apparently this file was corrupted. I wiped out the file
and recreated it and so far everything seems to be back to
normal.
