Nologin string in /etc/passwd

Hi all!

I noticed today that in the /etc/passwd file, some users have the string
"Nologin" and "Nologin*" in the second field. Here's an example:

sspaldin:Nologin:257:36:Stephen Spalding:/u04/home/sspaldin:/usr/bin/ksh
jclaas:Nologin*:226:36:John Claas:/u04/home/jclaas:/usr/bin/ksh

Neither of these accounts are locked, so I can't figure out what the heck
this string is there for. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks!
