Dear admins,

my original question:

> on three of our servers (Alpha 4100, Digital Unix 4.0B Patchkit 8) the
automounter hangs and the commands df and ls -l / are hanging to.
> I know that only a reboot stops the automounter in that state.

> Here is my question:
> The three troublesome servers all have in common that I enlarged / and /usr
on saturday. All other servers of the same kind have no problems at all.
> The only problem I can think of is that I did the vdump/vrestore of / and
/usr in multi user mode.
> Can you link the problems with automounter to that fact (open files...)? How
to repair?

As usual - fast and valuable response from:

Bob Adams, adams_at_Kodak.com
Dr. Thomas P. Blinn, tpb_at_zk3.dec.com
Gerhard Nolte, gnolte_at_gwdg.de
Tom Leitner, tom_at_finwds01.tu-graz.ac.at
Dion Rivera, dion_rivera_at_hotmail.com

All of them pointing in the right direction - expecially Tom Leitner who
advised to remove /tmp_mnt after reboot. That's it!

For overall understanding let me quote the answer of Dr Thomas Blinn:
----------------------------------

If you can manage to kill off the automounter (or even if you can't, when you
shut down to single user mode), remove all the directories that are left over
from doing the dump of root and /usr in multiuser mode; when you do the dump
in that way, you are going to pick up the automounter's directories as well as
its symlinks that point to where things are mounted; apparently these confuse
the automounter if you restore the root and /usr file systems from backups in
that state.

I can't easily tell you what you need to clean up, but sometimes it's pretty
obvious. It all depends on how much stuff gets automounted in your site and
where it gets mounted.

Tom
