Well: I've partially solved it. The problem was actually my unfamiliarity
with the m4 language. I have added several FEATURE lines to the *.m4 file
of the mail server and was not aware that if I comment out a line with
#FEATURE(.....)
the line is still taken into account!! I have the mail server setup
cleaned up now and there's no need anymore for Digital Unix to append the
local domain name to outgoing local mails.
However, this problem is still open:
