startup hangs

I have been setting up 4.0d (from scratch, not upgrading) and have been
installing a number of things. I had occassion to reboot this morning
and discovered that as it prints out console messages on the various
services being started, it hangs after it has printed

route daemon started

so I hit control c and after a couple of more messages it hangs again
after printing

setting current time and date with ntpdate

another control c
and it finally gets to the login. After logging in I did a netstat -r
and it took forever. nslookup also didn't work. Then I did

route add default 198.68.96.1 0

whereupon this seemed to at least get these two things working.

So I have 2 questions
1. Knowing from the console messages where it hung, where would you go
to look for likely suspects?

2. How do I get my default gateway into the appropriate startup files?
