routed error at boot

I have one line in /etc/routes:
default 198.68.96.1

When I boot, the message printed at the console says
add net default : gateway 198.68.96.1
then
usage: < ... >
args
botched keyword: add

so my question is what's wrong? where did the net come from in the message?
I have no gateways file.
