I've checked the archives and re-read the man page a dozen times, but I
don't quite know if this is possible or not.
Is there any way to change the default LAT service description from
"Digital UNIX Version V4.0 LAT SERVICE" to a user-specified string? I
want to change the default, not the description for specific devices;
that's possible using latcp -i"description" .
The man pages for latcp indicate that it is possible for individual "LAT
lines" to be set up this way, but I am uncertain from the wording of the
man page if this would be the right method for setting up terminal
access; it looks like this is related to more application-specific LAT
services. (Plus, hardcoding the LAT devices that can be used as
terminals is inelegant and will require more than the usual amount of
administration as we add LAT printers and other devices.)
The reason I am concerned is this: at our site, the VMS systems all
list a generic, non-OS-specific description, so someone can't do a "show
services" at a terminal and find out what OS you're running. Before I
can add the DU system to the list of supported network devices that are
accessible via LAT, I have to remove all traces of external difference
between this system and the VMS servers, as a security measure.
I'm running DU 4.0D patchlevel 3 on an Alpha 4100, with SVR4-style LAT
devices, if that is significant. Thank you in advance.
