hi all

i just did a fresh install of 4.0d +patch kit 3 on 5 dec's - two dec
3000's and 3 dec alpha 200 personal workstations. we have run into some
problems with dxaccounts. on one of the 200's following a reboot after a
kernel build (for the patch kit) i got the following error when i tried to
run dxaccounts:
The password and group files are currently locked by another user.
        Please try again later.

there was no process running as shown by a ps aux. i could find no lock
files nor no clear indication of where they should be in the man pages.

yesterday, another person was adding a user to one of the dec 3000's when
dxaccounts (the normal one in /usr/bin/X11) crashed, after adding the
user. the same error now appears there as well.

interestingly, the older version in
        /usr/tcb/bin/dxaccount can still be run.

any suggestions on
        1) where the lock files might be so i can eliminate them
        2) why this happened to begin with
        3) where i should look to try and find out

thanks in advance!

ciao
claudia
