SUMMARY: install of SSRT0588U renders the system unusable?

The Answer Is:

It turns out that, for SSRT0588U to operate correctly, you must have
already installed patch kit #3 on your system, at least under DU 4.0d,
but probably under all the operating systems.

Once I installed #3 and then installed the edauth fix, everything
works correctly. This little item was apparently left out of the
documentation for SSRT0588U.
