Hello fellow Tru64-unix gurus,

[Sorry for the delay: I had to wait for a brown-out :-]

I must first thank the following people for their quick and information
replies:
        georg.tasman_at_db.com
        Nestor Ruiz <nruiz_at_bvl.com.pe>
        Jim Belonis <belonis_at_dirac.phys.washington.edu>
        Tapani Tiensuu <tapani.tiensuu_at_vtt.fi>
        Mitch Bertone <mbertone_at_gtech.com>

I my original poster I reported an problematic file which appeared on an
ADVFS volume made up of three devices. Listing and running showfile on the
file produced a "not found" and "Invalid argument" errors respectful. For
the records, the system is our main file server which is running Tru64UNIX
V4.0D with patch kit #3. I wanted to know if running 'verify' (part of
ADVFS) would fix the problem - which in turn might cause problems.

Some suggestion were:
  - stale nfs mount
  - removing the ADVFS domain or device
  - the file might contain non-printable characters etc
  - the file might have been mistaken for the sparse
    ADVFS quota.(user|group) file

Luckily (well!) we experienced a brown-out. Upon restoration of power I
had the chance to run 'verify -f' (for fix) on the affected ADVFS domain.
Verify reported an 'incomplete link' on the problematic file and fixed the
problem. All is well!

Regards,
Rich
