Date change problem

I have a box running DU 4.0d with the current date. When I change it to a future date,
it works fine. But when I change it back to a date before the current date, the term inal session is hung, and dtwm and console running at 50% CPU time and the console display error messages constantly:

Warning: Select failed, error code 22

Any ideas??????????
