Perl and db problem

Dear managers, we are in process of migrating some of our services from
Linux to Digital UNIX version 4.0D (with no patches currently installed).
While doing this, we experienced a problem.

On our Linux server, we use web-based POP3 client. It is a Perl based
application that uses databases to store data for all users. It uses ".db"
files for that. No matter what we do on DU, when accessed, client program
creates ".dir" and ".pag" files and ignores ".db" files. We tried to install
newest gdbm, but that didn't solve the problem.

Any suggestion will help. Thank you very much.
