Hi everybody,

I have a DEC 3000/300X workstation (64 MB RAM) that came with a RZ28
internal disk, which lets it boot successfully to OpenVMS.

I also have these two RZ26L internal disks, that came from another
DEC 3000/300X which used to run the 1994 version of DEC OSF/1. I am
not sure which of the two disks contains the booting information.
At this point, I have detached the RZ28 VMS disk, and attached the two
unix RZ26L disks to my DEC 3000/300X, trying to get it to boot OSF/1
instead of VMS.

The problem is that after it completes the initial power tests, it reaches
the following SCSI error:

INIT-S-SCC
INIT-S-NI
INIT-S-SCSI
INIT-S-ISDN
AUDIT_BOOT_STARTS ... /* At this point the VMS disk starts spinning,
                        * while in the case of each of the two unix disks,
                        * nothing happens.
                        */

? T_ERR_SCSI - DEVICE_NOT_PRESENT

  84 FAIL

>>>

I have tried attaching the two unix disks one at a time, and both at the
same time, and I keep getting the above error message. When I attach the
VMS drive, there are no problems (in all three cases, I am using the same
connecting cables).

The following is a poor attempt to illustrate the jumper settings on
each of the three disks (x=missing pin, o=jumper present, ox=both):

. . . ox . . . . . . RZ28 (VMS)
. . . o . . . . . . (???)

o o . x . . . . . . RZ26L (OSF/1)
o o . . . . . . . . (SCSI id = 3?)

. . o x . . . . . . RZ26L (OSF/1)
. . o . . . . . . . (SCSI id = 4?)

Why is this happening? Is there a switch on these drives I do not see?
I would really appreciate your input.
Please let me know what other info you want me to provide.
Thanks a lot.
