installing 4.0D crashes with a kernel panic

While installing digital unix 4.0D from cdrom, the install process
crashes and dumps core.

What I am doing: I am installing 4.0D on a brand new server (alpha PC
LX164, SRM version 5.3-3, CRD-5440-1 RAID, 1Gig of memory).

1. power up the system, do 'show dev' at SRM to make sure all
devices are recognized. (dka400 is cdrom, dka0 is install disk).
2. boot -fl i dka400
        - boot up starts and I press 'enter' when it asks me for
                kernel file. (default = 'vmunix')
3. cd-rom boots, comes up with X-server. Install window pops up.
4. I choose 'default' install plug in values for hostname, root-password,
ate and time, and start the install.
5. It says its installing 31 subsets, and starts doing so...

6. after going through somewhere between 7 to 13 subsets, it crashes,
dumps core, and trips back into SRM.

The error message I see (before it scrolls off) is -
'unaligned kernel space access from kernel mode'.

What I did:
1. spoke with our reseller, and he suggested booting with 'memlimit=256'
to circumvent a possible bug that happens with configs larger
        than 256 Meg of RAM.
This does not help. I had the install crash pretty
        much in the same manner.

2. Looked through mailing-list archive at http://www-archive.ornl.gov:8000/.
And didnot find any mention of similar bug.

3. Searched dejanews archives but still no luck.

I am currently trying to get the reseller to give us the cust.code so
I could call techsupport at digital.

I appreciate any help in resolving the install crash problem. I'll
summarize the responses. Thanks in advance!

ps: Also, I am wondering if there is a way to examine the crash dump
without a functioning OS first. Is there a way for me to
boot into the cdrom and examine the coredump on an arbitrary
        device?
