I had similar problem somewhere around 5.0. The solution was to downgrade
firware and then upgrade again. Simply flashing again with the same
firmware did not remove the problem.
Please use the image from

it works fine for me on AS1000A 5/300.

I saw exactly the same thing on an AS1000A 5/400 here too. I rebooted
with the firmware CD a second time and all went well, system has been
running fine since.

I also had a problem with upgading ver 5.3 firware on an AlphaServer
1000 using the CD that came with the 4.0e OS . There was a "file
missing" problem. A friend also had the problem which he solved by using
the firmware images on the DEC web site. Mine didnt get solve that way
and DEC came in with a new cpu!
I should have posted this info to the list but after nearly a weeks
unplaned downtime I had too much to do.

I had this problem with a pair of AS1000. We had to get DEC out and
they couldn't really find what was happening. After lots and lots of
retries it worked once on each of our machines and they left it at that.
Not totally satisfactory but it served our purposes.

this is a problem you will have everytime when you try to update a AS1000
machine. There seems to be a problem with interrupts from the network
adapter.
Solution: Disconnect all cables from the network adapters before booting
the CD.
Good luck
