Memory problem during boot

We have two AlphaStations 600 5/266 with 1 GByte memory each (all 4 banks
full).

Last February we updated the firmware to rev. 6.9 and the OS to Digital
4.0E. Both systems recognized the full 1GB memory.

Two weeks ago we switched off both machines for a couple of hours.

After that, they did not boot correctly, showing the following error
message:

panic (cpu 0): get_first_free:
                        no free memory!
DUMP: No primary swap, no explicit dumpdev,
nowhere to put header, giving up.

After several attempts with different memory configurations, we found that
both systems boot with a memory limit of 350 Mbyte or less, that is with
the vmunix option:

      memlimit=350

On the contrary, if we try with:

vmunix memlimit=400 (or greater) we get the error message:

contig_malloc: not enough aligned node memory
pmr 0: 215 contiguous pages available
panic (cpu 0): contig_malloc of in-memory sg table failed
DUMP: ....
Boot process stops.

Mereover if we try without options, we get the above mentioned
get_first_free panic message and boot process stops.

At present, both machines `see' only 350 Mbyte even if their physical
memory is 1 GByte.

Any ideas how to recover the full memory ?

All suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks in advance.
