That pesky backspace key

So the problem is the backspace key doesn't work in Motif applications on
our NCD X terminals. It deletes the character to the right of the cursor
instead of the left. But it works fine in textmode emacs. xev reports
the key as "Delete". If I use xmodmap to change it to "BackSpace", it
works in Motif apps, but pulls up help in emacs (i.e. it sends ^H) which
is not desirable. I know it is possible to get both to work at the same
time, because everything is fine when logged on to the console. But
apparently I need to use something besides xmodmap to fix it. We are
using xdm logins on DU4.0D. Thanks for any help!
