Thank's to all of you who replied. The best solution in my case is
(Paul Watson's <phwatso_at_cooper-energy-services.com>suggestion):
1. run /usr/bin/X11/dxsysinfo to check which device is the CD, in
my case: rz0
2. as root:
chmod 666 /dev/rrz0?
chmod 644 /dev/cam
I will sumarize the answers that give differ from what I just
worte:
Jean <schuller_at_sbgal4.in2p3.fr>: Suggests to use a program called Sudo
(
http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/) that allows (group of) users to execute
actions normally restricted to root.
Larry A. Magnello <Larry-Magnello_at_ouhsc.edu>: gave me a reference to a
page with links to DEC Unix pages including books online for DEC Unix at
http://halite.westal.com/webstuff/fadein.html and
http://halite.westal.clom/webstuff/defaul1.html
richard n. frank <rnfrank_at_wolfram.llnl.gov>: Suggests also to check the
permissions for /usr/bin/X11/demos/xcd (should be 644).
Dr. Tom Blinn <tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com>: Suggests that access to the CD
drive can be given to a restricted set of users to be defined at
/etc/groups, followed by changing the group ownership of /dev/rrz0? (my
specific device).
Thank's to Jean Schuller, Paul Watson, Richard Bemrose, Larry A.
Magnello, richard n. frank and Dr. Tom Blinn.
best,
rafi
