My original question had to do with why our 4100 system would no longer
boot our LPS printers, but the backup LPS system would.

The variety of suggestions were interesting, but not so enlightening
as going back to the other sys admins and asking them again if they
had made any changes to LPS on the 4100.
One of them had, changing the bootoptions from "bootp and tftp" to
"tftp". Why that should have affected things, though, is still not
clear, since the lpsad daemons run as before. He had also moved all
the accounting files from /var/adm to /var/adm/lpd for "neatness"
reasons, which my comparison of an out-of-date printcap and lpsodb
files (by a few days) didn't catch.
So, once again it's the simple things that cause the most chaos.
