Thanks to Bryan Bahnmiller for his help.

Original question:
I am trying to create a "cloned" installation that will be as automated
as possible. I have run into a snag trying to configure my Ethernet
connection using 'netconfig -ui cli'. It seems the man page is
incomplete/incorrect in that many of my commands are rejected. I can do
'-host' commands but trying to do '-interface' actions fails with a
variety of errors depending on what I give it.
Is there some specific order I must follow?

I have tried man page and the -Help options. The manuals seem to only
discuss using the gui netconfig and not the command-line netconfig.

Resolution:

I can usr 'rcmgr' to edit /etc/rc.config and manually edit /etc/routes
in order to change the configuration. A reboot or /sbin/rc3.d/S00inet
<start | stop> will start up the Ethernet with the new configuration. A
pitfall here is that using netconfig after might overwrite the changes.

I am still miffed that netconfig -ui cli doesn't work as advertised in
the man page.
