Summary: Modem on tty00

Many thanks for the responses, it is good to know you are not alone with
these problems.

There does appear to be some features with tty00 on the Alphaserver 4x00
range due to the RCM built in to the system. I dug around my archives (that
box of useless bits of paper under the desk) and found a fax that I received
some time ago via a colleague, from Digital, I wish I'd remembered it
earlier, here it is : -

Please be aware of the consequences of changing the COM1_FLOW parameter on
the Alphaserver4x00 SRM console.

This parameter determines the method of communication with the COM1 port.
There are three possible selections,

SOFTWARE
This is the default setting, this restricts the speed of the COM1
port to 9600 baud, and allows use of the RCM modem port if required.

HARDWARE
This setting allows for hardware control of the COM1 port and is
needed if higher speeds (than the 9600 baud that the RCM supports are
required on the COM1 port. HOWEVER if COM1_FLOW is set to HARDWARE then the
RCM MUST be disabled, see below for details of how to do this. If the RCM is
NOT disabled then the system appears to hang in the PUST, typically with
"Console Started" or "Probe I/O Subsystem" on the OCP.

BOTH
This allows either hardware or software control of the COM1 port but
because of this the RCM MUST be disabled.

Disabling the RCM
The RCM is the module that has the output ports COM1, COM2 etc...
This module has three 34 pin Berg connectors of which two are
jumpered together by a short cable. If the cable is between the two outside
connectors then the RCM is ENABLED. If the cable is between the two left
hand connectors, (furthest from the bulkhead) then the RCM is DISABLED.
Also with the RCM disabled, it is possible that the OCP will be
blank at the P00>>> prompt.

I also recall reading in some SRM firmware release notes about changes in
the behaviour of the COM1_FLOW parameter, unfortunately I cannot remember
which version, and I can find no way of searching for old versions of
firmware release notes. Perhaps one of our friends on the Digital side of
the firewall may be able to help us ?

I hope the above may be useful

Regards

Kevin Jones
