Strange License Problem With XP1000 Workstations

     Folks-

We're installing several of the new Digital/Compaq XP1000
workstations as replacements for existing Digital 500au workstations,
and are seeing some strange OSF-BASE license-related errors.

The 500au licenses are transferred to the new XP1000s as part
of the "upgrade" installation. The 500au's came with an OSF-BASE
license, and the enclosed "Upgrade Guide" describes editing the
OSF-BASE license to change the "Number of Units" from 12 to 15
on the XP1000s which we did. The OSF-USR license has the expected
"Number of units: 400" in the XP1000 license.

We have been/are running xdm and only xdm on the 500au's and
XP1000s (no cde at all). We are running DU 4.0E with jumbo patch #1
v40_mup01, ssrt0583u, and ssrt0588u installed.

The new XP1000s have started kicking out the following error in
the kern.log

vmunix: Maximum number of users allowed by OSF-USR license PAK are
already logged in

when only one person is attempting to log in and no other users are
logged in. We have further determined that this error only occurs
when four people have logged into and logged out of the the Console.
When the fifth person logs in on the Console or attempts to rlogin,
we get the above OSF-USR license errors. Somehow the XP1000 still
thinks that the previous four Console users are logged in. These
errors do NOT occur if four folks rlogin and out over the network --
only when folks log in and log out on the Console. A reboot will fix
this problem temporarily.

Anyone got any idea what might be going wrong here? Is there
some change in the license we should know about? Why do the XP1000s
license servers think that previous Console users are still logged in?

     Thanks-in-advance,

     Mike
