auto print filtering? LPRng/Magicfilter and counting pages

Is anyone familiar with something that will do automatic print filtering?

Such as: figure out if a file is TeX, ps, pdf, dvi, text, and send it
through the appropriate filter to print automatically? (Such as LPRng or
Magicfilter?)

We are using magicfilter, but I need help configuring it better, or to use
a different product.
It's necessary since we have plenty of people who send something to the
printer, not knowing it's not the right format, and wastes a ream of paper.

I'm also looking for some way (any way!) to do print accounting on non dec
printers. I've played around with it but if someone sends PCL, it always
thinks it's one page, and if they send PS, it calculates the length as the
number of pages the respecive postscript was if it were printed out text (a
1 page postscript file says it is 32 pages).

Thanks!
