SVGA Monitor Question

Hello, list!
    I'm working with a brand-new AS1200, with 4.0e FIS on it. I'm trying
to get it to sync up with a Sony multiscanHG monitor. This is a slightly
elderly monitor, one which I'm almost certain will not sync above 60Hz
(vertical). It works fine as a console, but as soon as 'X' (X, DCE, ???)
kicks in (multi-user boot) it goes into the proverbial 'I'm being over
scanned' gibberish.
With a different AS1200, and a different monitor (NEC multiSync, I
believe), we solved this problem via additions to the 'args' in
/var/X11/Xserver.conf: '-screen 800 -vsync 60'. Works like a charm, on
that system, with that monitor. Sadly, doesn't work with the new
system (and/or Sony monitor). I've tried several variations on the
above, all of which behave identically (even to the shade of squiggles
that the monitor jumps into). The man pages for Xserver no longer list
the -vsync parameter (if they ever did).
Lest you think me a complete idiot, the working system is down at my
employer's office, whilst I'm up here at home, doing the telecommuting
thing. I had the new server drop shipped here for configuration, on the
assumption that my old monitor would suffice. Oops.
If someone on this list has a clue what I've messed up, or that 4.0e
won't work, or whatever, I would be most appreciative!

TIA,
    -j
