Hello,
First, I want to thank all people who responded:

Guy R. Loucks (Guy.Loucks_at_det.nsw.edu.au).
My questions were the following:
1. I understand from previous posts and some man pages that I can mirror
the disk containing root, /usr and a swap filesystem to an identical
second disk. Can I do this with my existing /, /usr, swap filesystems or
do I have to do a complete reinstallation?
2. Following the DU documentation about LSM I would implement at least
one disk group for the external disks and another one for the internal
disks. Is it then possible to move the external disks to another server
and serve the data from this second server in case my 1000A dies? Which
steps are necessary besides enabling LSM on the second server and
changing some exports and fstab files?
Now the answers:
1.
All people said that mirroring the system disk is no problem and no
reinstallation is required. The tools to use are volencap and
volrootmir.
2.
This one is more complicated. People seem to agree that moving the
external, LSM controlled disks is possible but one has to use rather
complicated procedures. Here are the suggestions:
a) Read the LSM manuals and follow the steps described therein. It
turned out that this is my biggest problem, because we don't have the
LSM License and therefore we don't have the LSM docs by now. All I know
up to now is from the basic LSM man pages like volintro etc. Once we
have the license and the documentation I'll dive into the manuals.
b) Use volsave on the first server and volrestore on the backup server
to copy the disk group configuration. (Alan Garde)
c) You can write your own script with lots of vol$&_at_#)(!&$ commands.
(Felix Maurer) I don't understand this particular one by now.
d) Use voldgexport on the first server and voldgimport on the backup
server. One has to create device files, links, etc. also. (George
Guethlein)
e) Buy cluster software and define shared storage. (Alan Rollow)
Unfortunately, this is too expensive for us.
Again thanks to all who responded and best regards,
Ralf Eichmann
